Yow...Couldn't believe my ears the other day!
I was on my way to work when I suddenly heard 2 familiar voices licking from the sound... I stopped everything I was doing to listen keenly to the music, enjoyed the flows and came to this unbelievable conclusion.

Yes. The mighty Herbalist Crew was back in town!!!

Founded by Joha and Trifinga in the late 90's, Herbalist Crew now consists of three members hailing from Geneva (Joha, Trifinga and Toyin). After releasing many songs with jamaican artists such as Degree, Alozade, Chico (size 8 to the max!), a wicked underground album ("Strictly Promotional", 2003) and a live album ("Live at Ella's") in 2004, and after producing their own 45 at 321 Strong in 2002 (Dominants/Dominés, foundation piece a tune!), these wise and conscious artists are back for good!

Their new album, simply called "Herbalizm", contains 16 positive and intelligent tracks and a video. Some are sung in french (with sense!), while some other include english sung parts by sweet nigerian born singer Toyin. "Herbalizm" also contains featurings with superstars Chico and Murray Man!

To celebrate Soldia Sound's 7th birthday this friday, we decided to invite none other than the wicked "South Rakkas Crew"!!!

Being sick as fuck, me nuh know if me a go dehdeh, but YOU have to be there anyway!

As you ('re supposed to) know, the South Rakkas Crew hails from Jamaica, Canada and Orlando.

They produced big international hit riddims like Chinkuzi, Red Alert, Bionic Ras, Clappaz and songs like "Bun Up", Real Hot" (Capleton), "Under Mi Sensi" (Vegas, Hollow Point, Alozade), "It Only Takes Love" (Sizzla)... etcaetera, etcaetera....

In all of their prods you'll find this very specific electro touch that they brought in dancehall music before anyone else.

Promotion Of The Day: "Dangerzone" mixtape by Straight Sound

Talkin'bout promoting big things, here comes the brand new mixtape from what I would call the "twin sound" of Soldia Sound, the mighty Straight Sound from Geneva. Migwaan, Mehdi and Jo are 3 reggae activists dat release nuff sell off mixtapes featuring hard mixes and tough graphics by Riga.
Da mix yah named "Dangerzone". It happens to be Straight Sound's 8th mixtape. Today, thing called promotion.
As you know (or as you're... supposed to know), I'm part of a soundsystem named Soldia Sound. As nuff sound systems, we're of course specialised in reggae and dancehall music. So there's nothing really special about that... except that (as any soundman would tell you) we are actually way better than the all of them, play the best tunes the hardest way, own the baddest dubs and the wickedest fans who drive themselves the fastest cars with the loudest sound and eat the best burgers and sip the best juices smoking the baddis weed sitting on the baddis chairs and so and so... But anyway...
Soldia Sound's official selector is my man Chukks. And besides his tremendous reggae and dancehall knowledge, he also owns a huge music culture. Est- ce que c’est ta première fois en Suisse?…

Martelo : Non, j’ai déjà joué une fois à Genève, à Berne, et j’étais au Festival de Montreux avec Santigold l’année passée.


Est-ce que tu pourrais te décrire en quelques mots?

A la base, je suis un DJ mais je produis aussi des singles et des remixes.

On te connaît aussi comme le DJ officiel de Santigold. Comment vous êtes vous rencontré?

On s’est connu à travers Diplo. Elle avait besoin d’un DJ pour les UK. Donc on s’est rencontré et à peine 30 minutes après, on était déjà sur scène pour un show à Londres. Ca s’est d’ailleurs passé super mal. Ca a été problablement l’un des moments les plus embarrassants de ma vie! Rien ne fonctionnait, les platines jouaient les tracks à l’envers, enfin c’était un vrai merdier quoi… Ensuite, elle m a rappelé et on est parti en tournée tous les 2. Ca fait maintenant 2 ans et on a joué ensemble à travers le monde entier.

Est-ce que tu es juste son DJ ou est-ce que tu produis aussi des sons pour elle?

Non, je suis son DJ. Mais j’ai fait un remix pour elle. C’est un truc un peu barré, super rapide. Tu vas voir, je vais le jouer ce soir!

Ta musique est une espèce de patchwork de plein de styles différents. Tu mixes du Grime, du Dancehall, de la Pop, de la Bassline avec plein d’autres trucs. Mais dis-moi, y a-t-il des styles que tu ne jouerais pas?

Non, il n’y a rien que je ne jouerais pas. J’adore les trucs originaux. Récemment, j’ai joué en Belgique et j’ai même joué du Hardstyle! parce que c’est énorme là-bas. Avant qu’on joue, il y avait à peine 28 personnes dans la salle. Et dès que j’ai commencé à jouer du Hardstyle, la salle s’est remplie en 2 minutes, les gens étaient comme des dingues! J’aime m’adapter aussi au public pour qui je joue. J’aime aussi la musique portugaise, le hip hop français, le hip hop espagnol, la Dutch House, le Baltimore Club, Afrojack, tous ces trucs là.

Quand j’étais petit, il me semble qu’il y avait plein de catégories. Il y avait ceux qui écoutaient du hip hop, ceux qui écoutaient du rock, ceux qui écoutaient de la techno. Et chacun se devait de “représenter” son style en quelque sorte. C’était assez exclusif. Aujourd’hui, avec l’arrivée de l’électro, on dirait que les barrières ont éclaté, ce n’est plus une honte d’écouter plein de styles de musiques différents, de les mixer ensemble. Est-ce que ce métissage de styles au sein de la musique n’est pas un peu un reflet de la société actuelle? Qu’en penses-tu?

Je crois que la musique electro est une musique faite essentiellement pour danser et quand tu sors en club, la seule chose qui t’intéresse finalement c’est de danser.
Par exemple, quand j’étais petit, j’étais à fond dans Metallica, Pearl Jam, Green Day et ces trucs et j’écoutais aussi du hip hop. Et puis, le hip hop a petit-à-petit commencé à m’emmerder un peu, c’est devenu un peu shiny et tout ça, c’est devenu du R n B quoi. Puis, j’ai entendu des gars comme Switch, Sebastian, Busy P et écoutant leur son, tu pouvais dire qu’ils avaient grandi avec le hip hop. Ca s’entend dans leurs samples de batteries par exemple. Et ça sonnait différemment du reste de la dance music, je déteste la dance music, à part le garage, la jungle et les trucs anglais. Quand j’ai entendu leur travail, je me suis dit: ok, ces gars sont comme moi, je vais leur montrer ce dont je suis capable. Je crois simplement que toute cette nouvelle génération d’artistes ont décidé de mélanger toutes leurs influences avec des sons electro pour faire danser les gens le plus possible. Et puis, aujourd’hui, les gens sont beaucoup plus ouverts qu’avant grâce à Internet. Internet a tout changé. Ce n’est plus une honte d’écouter de la “dance music”.

Donne-moi le nom d’un artiste, d’une icône de la musique passée ou présente avec qui tu aurais souhaité travailler.

Je ne sais pas. Je dirais Björk. J’aimerais bien faire quelque chose avec elle. Elle ne se met aucune limite. Avec elle, tout peut se passer. Il faut être ouvert à tout. C’est la même chose pour tout. Il faut être prêt à tout, man.

Donne-moi 3 mots pour décrire la Suisse.

Heu… Les montagnes… l’argent… le chocolat… je me réjouissais dans l’avion en me disant que j’allais pouvoir manger du chocolat ou des glaces ici!

Tu veux en ajouter un 4ème?

Ouais, je dirais… imprévisible. A chaque fois que je joue ici, je ne sais pas à quoi m’attendre. Le public est toujours différent à chaque soirée.

Est-ce que tu pourrais me parler de encore de tes projets?

Je travaille sur la compilation de Chipfield qui sort le mois prochain, j’ai produit quelques beats dessus. Hervé (NDR: son colocataire, qui est également un artiste émergeant de la scène anglaise) et moi allons commencer une émission radio. Je travaille aussi actuellement sur 5-6 morceaux que je vais sortir sous forme d’un EP qui s’appellera “Braveheart”. A part ça, Hervé et moi également sommes sur un projet qui s’appellera “Firebeaters”. Ce sera des vieilles party tunes un peu stupides qu’on va remettre à l’ordre du jour! Enfin, tu vois quoi, busy, busy, busy!
